Astrological Glossary

Ascendant

The degree of the zodiac which is rising at birth or at any other time under consideration.

Ceres

An asteroid named after the Earth Mother and Goddess of grain and breakfast cereals.

Declination

The distance in degrees from the Equator, north or south. The celestial equivalent of lattitude.

Equator

The circle around the middle of the Earth dividing the northern and southern hemispheres. In the sky, this is the circle of zero degrees declination. When a heavenly body is on the equator, its influence is especially powerful.

Juno

An asteroid named after the wife of Jupiter.

M.C.

M.C. is short for "Medium Coeli"--literally, "the middle of the sky". It is the zenith, at the top of the chart, up in the public eye. It's a spot relevant to career.

Pallas

Pallas is an asteroid named after Athena, the wise warrior goddess.

Retrograde

When a planet appears to move backward in the zodiac, it is said to be "retrograde." This takes place when planets are far away from the sun and close to the earth. Retrograde planets indicate a zig zag pattern of energy and a need to "take one step back before taking two steps forward." When a planet is retrograde there is a "re" theme at work. Engines are reversed. Retreat, repeat, review and re-evaluation may be in order. Retrograde planets represent lack of perspective and diminished perspective. Often there is more than meets the eye. Things don't always come fast when the associated planet is retrograde, but delays aren't denials. Backwards can be beautiful.

Stationary

A planet is stationary direct at the end of it's retrograde period. When a planet turns stationary it is time carry forward. You're on the go and your direction is up. You can recover the ground upon which you recently backtracked.

Stellium

A stellium consists of three or more planets in the same sign of the zodiac. A stellium often brings great power and focus.

Tropic of Cancer

The Tropic of Cancer is a circle on the celestial sphere, as well as on the surface of the Earth, parallel to and at an angular distance of 23 degrees and 27 minutes from the equator. In the sky, it describes the limits of the apparent northern motion of the sun. When the Moon or a planet is beyond the Tropic it acts weird and Uranian.

Tropic of Capricorn

The Tropic of Capricorn is a circle on the celestial sphere parallel to and at an angular distance of 23 degrees and 27 minutes from the equator. It describes the limits of the apparent southern motion of the sun. When the Moon or a planet is beyond the Tropic is acts weird and Uranian.

Tropical Zodiac and Sidereal Zodiac

Tropical Zodiac (Seasonal Zodiac) begins with the Vernal Point, and the Spring Equinox, when the Sun is directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer. Although the Tropical Zodiac is used by the vast majority of Western Astrologers, it is not the only Zodiac system. The Sidereal Zodiac (sidereal means star) begins when the Sun aligns with a Fixed Star in the Constellation of Aries. The Sidereal Zodiac is also known as the Fixed Zodiac. In Tropical Astrology the qualities associated with the signs are linked to the seasons, rather than to the fixed stars, and therefore the precession of the equinoxes and the growing difference between the Tropical Signs and the relative positions of their namesake constellations is of no consequence. In Sidereal Astrology (both Western and Eastern) the qualities of the signs are not related to the seasons, but rather to the specific portions of the ecliptic as measured against the fixed stars.

Vesta

Vesta is an asteroid associated with the Vestal Virgins and named after the hearth fire goddess Vesta. It is She who is symbolized by the virgin that appears in the Virgo pictograph.
